The present continuous tense is frequently used in daily conversations, reflecting the vibrancy of the language. In this article, we will thoroughly explore the structure and usage of the present continuous tense in Turkish. Additionally, you can watch my detailed video on this topic with explanations in English and Russian here. I am confident it will make the subject more understandable for you. I look forward to your comments on this topic.
Formation of Present Continuous Tense (yor): In Turkish, the present continuous tense is expressed with the suffix "yor". This suffix is added to the verb root and personal suffixes to form the tense. For example, the root of the verb "gelmek" (to come) is "gel". It is used in various forms like "geliyor", "geliyorum".
Four Forms of Present Continuous Tense:
Positive: I am coming (Ben geliyorum)
Negative: I am not coming (Ben gelmiyorum)
Positive Question: Am I coming? (Ben geliyor muyum?)
Negative Question: Am I not coming? (Ben gelmiyor muyum?)
Personal Pronouns:
I (Ben)
You (Sen)
He/She/It (O)
We (Biz)
You (Plural) (Siz)
They (Onlar)
Positive Form: In the positive form, "ı/i/u/ü" is added to the verb root according to vowel harmony rules, followed by "yor" and the personal suffix.
Positive Present Continuous Tense Suffixes:
Example Sentences:
I am reading a book. (Ben kitap okuyorum.)
You are listening to music. (Sen müzik dinliyorsun.)
He/She is cooking. (O yemek yapıyor.)
Negative Form: In the negative form, "mı/mi/mu/mü" is added to the verb root, followed by "yor" and the personal suffix. However, as you will see in the video, I have demonstrated this with only an "m".
Negative Present Continuous Tense Suffixes:
Example Sentences:
I am not watching TV. (Ben televizyon izlemiyorum.)
You are not running. (Sen koşmuyorsun.)
He/She is not sleeping. (O uyumuyor.)
Positive Question Form: In the positive question form of the present continuous tense, "mu" is inserted between "yor" and the personal suffix. For "they" (Onlar), only "mı" is added at the end.
Positive Question Present Continuous Tense Suffixes:
Example Sentences:
Am I singing a song? (Ben şarkı söylüyor muyum?)
Are you driving a car? (Sen araba kullanıyor musun?)
Is he/she sleeping? (O uyuyor mu?)
Negative Question Form in Present Continuous Tense: In the negative question form, "mu" is inserted between "yor" and the personal suffix, and an "m" is added at the beginning. For "they" (Onlar), only "mı" is added at the end.
Negative Question Present Continuous Tense Suffixes:
Example Sentences:
Am I not cooking? (Ben yemek yapmıyor muyum?)
Aren't you reading a book? (Sen kitap okumuyor musun?)
Isn't he/she doing sports? (O spor yapmıyor mu?)
